Alsa Wood Footpath Improvements – Footpaths 31 & 32
The Challenge
Footpaths 31 and 32 through Alsa Wood had become difficult to use during the winter months due to wet, muddy, and slippery conditions. The existing routes were affected by poor ground conditions, making access challenging for members of the public and limiting safe year-round use of the woodland paths.
Delivered for Essex Highways and involving Elsenham Parish Council, the project aimed to improve accessibility across two sections of footpath measuring approximately 280m and 15m.
Client: Essex Highways
The key objectives were to:
- Improve year-round accessibility
- Reduce muddy and slippery conditions
- Create safer walking routes for the public
- Protect and enhance access within the woodland environment
- Improve the overall usability of the footpaths
The Solution
GTM carried out improvement works to transform the condition of the footpaths and provide more stable, accessible walking routes through the woodland.
The project involved:
- Footpath access improvement works
- Surface preparation and stabilisation
- Improving route usability during wet conditions
- Careful working within a natural woodland environment
- Delivering practical, long-term access solutions
Our team worked efficiently throughout the winter period, completing the works safely and with minimal disruption to the surrounding area.
The Results
The completed improvements have transformed Footpaths 31 and 32 into safer and more accessible routes that can now be enjoyed throughout the year.
The project successfully delivered:
- Improved walking conditions during wet weather
- Safer and more stable footpaths
- Better accessibility for the local community
- Enhanced usability of the woodland routes
- Long-term improvements to public access infrastructure
The upgraded paths now provide a far more enjoyable and reliable route for residents and visitors exploring the woodland.

Outside the main vegetation cutting season, our team continues to support infrastructure, environmental, and community projects through practical land management and access improvement works.
By delivering projects like this, GTM helps create safer, more accessible outdoor spaces while supporting the long-term usability and enjoyment of natural environments for local communities.
